The Power of a Father’s Blessing

The Power of a Father's Blessing

By: Susan Deborah Schiller

No matter how old we are, we need a father's blessing. Men are created to be Protectors, Providers, and Parents who love us unconditionally. But when we have no one like that in our lives, what do we do?

Recently, a child described her life dream to me. It was bold and beautiful, including career, kids, and vehicle. She envisioned her whole future and I felt honored to hear her heart. Only one thing was missing: a husband and father for her children. When asked about that, she replied, "I've never had a dad. My mom's boyfriends always hurt her. I don't need a husband. Well, maybe a boyfriend."

Our generation needs the promise of Malachi 4 right here and now. Like this little girl, survivors of sociopathic abuse wonder if there is such a thing as a good man. As a generation, we are losing faith in kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self-control – gifts of the Holy Spirit that makes us like our Creator.

A man in God's image has a Father's heart. He does not judge us for our weaknesses. He doesn't scold us for our faults. He loves us to life, by speaking blessings.

This past week, a man named Newell Hendricks pushed a few keys and sent me this Psalm. He customized it, using my name, and I have removed that, so that you can place yourself in this blessing:

Psalm 45

Your heart overflows with a

     Goodly theme;

You address your verses to the powerful;

Your tongue is like the pen of a

     Ready scribe.

You are the fairest of the daughters

          Of the earth

     Grace is poured upon your lips;

     Therefore God has blessed you

          For ever.

Gird your sword upon your thigh,

          O mighty one,

     In your glory and majesty!

In your majesty ride forth victoriously

     For the cause of truth and to defend

          The right’

     Let your right hand teach you

          Dread deeds!

Your arrows are sharp

     In the heart of the evil ones

     Who fall under the power

          Of your truth.

I'm not sure I can properly convey how this blessing healed my heart, and continues to bind up fresh wounds. It's priceless!

Please open your own heart and receive the Good News that our Father sings over you, longs to dance with you, and is blessing you today. You may feel all alone, rejected by those who are called by His Name… but you are not alone.

There are men and women who listen to His heart beat, who hear His call to love the forsaken, who are consumed by His search to find the lost sheep.

Sometimes it begins by blessing yourself. We can't always wait to be noticed. I began writing blessings to my own spirit, back in 2007. It really works.

Put your name into the Psalms. Customize it. Let the Truth be like a river which waters your very roots. And watch for fatherly and motherly people to show up, who don't ask you for anything… but instead just want to bless you.
