Transported to Another World: Art as Seen through the Perspective of the Oldest Holocaust Survivor

Transported to Another World

By: Susan Deborah Schiller

I have always been drawn to the stories of holocaust survivors because they have so much HOPE and FAITH and LOVE to share with us. What does it take to survive a concentration camp, to even "dance beneath the gallows" as these dear ladies describe?

Below is a video of the oldest survivor of the Nazi death camps, and at age 109 (she has since died) Alice Herz-Sommer shares how music transported her to "another world". Through the portal of her art, her spirit survived and learned to thrive.

I hope you will take a few minutes to hear Alice Herz-Sommer's story, because creating art – writing, drawing, composing music – makes life beautiful.

Beauty give us a hope. Hope opens the door to believe that all things are possible with God.

As Alice's art "transported her to another world," so our art – no matter if we have much talent or little talent – is capable of opening the door to a higher existence.

Thriving, instead of suriving. Loving, instead of lusting. Believing, instead of doubting. Doing, instead of procrastinating. Collaborating, instead of competing. Encouraging, instead of criticizing. Forgiving, instead of taking offfense. Letting go, instead of clutching. Knowing we are enough and there are enough resources and opportunities for us.

This world we are creating with our thoughts and intentions is accessed through the doorway of art.

Art is war.

I dare to believe I can live like Alice Herz-Sommer, even to age 109, with the same childlike joy, with God's grace. Do you?

Choosing love today,

Sue
