The Honey Rock

The Honey Rock

By: Susan Schiller

Much to my surprise, a carefully wrapped rock arrived in my mailbox yesterday, glistening with a shiny amber substance that appeared to pool out of the rock. "I will give you honey out of the rock," the note said, a message from Psalm 81:16. "From out of all the hard things you've been through, He will provide sweetness," said the artist, Cyn Rogalski, who had mailed me one of her special creations.

He let them ride over the highlands and feast on the crops of the fields. He nourished them with honey from the rock and olive oil from the stony ground. — Deuteronomy 32:13

Cyn Rogalski, sculptress and storyteller, creates pieces of art to help people remember the promises God has spoken over their lives.

Our tongues are like honey for the soul…

There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. – Proverbs 12:18

Kind words are like honey–sweet to the soul and healthy for the body. – Proverbs 16:24

It is the power of life-giving words, sweet words, like a honeycomb.

"Scientists and doctors are beginning to rediscover the effectiveness of honey as a wound treatment. In recent years, honey has been used effectively in clinical settings for the treatment of fist-sized ulcers extending to the bone, as well as for first, second and third degree burns. Complete healing has been reported without the need for skin grafts and with no infection or muscle loss… Raw honey makes a sterile, painless and effective wound dressing. Apply it directly to open cuts, abrasions and burns, and cover it with a piece of gauze. The results will occur quicker than with conventional alternatives, such as salves and creams."" – The Healing Power of Honey

What do you do with the words people give you? All of the text messages, emails, spoken words, letters, poems, songs, prophetic words, prayers… it all pours into your psyche, and then what?

Words are powerful, and they generally fall into two groups:

  1. Words that bless and bring life.
  2. Words that curse and bring death

God wants to bathe your soul in sweetness. He wants to fill you with His goodness, His nature, His provision. There are all kinds of ways, but one powerful way is through sweet, life-giving words applied to the soul like a dressing, and changed daily.

But he would feed you[a] with the finest of the wheat,
and with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.” – Psalm 81

My "hone for the soul" is collected in a series called "Love from Papa". I've been collecting love notes from God for many years. Some people call it prayer journaling. A few years back, I began to recognize that the love notes were really like a treasure map, guiding me to escape from the abusive situation I was in. But as you may already know, the real prison camp is inside of our minds. It's what caused us to become victims in the first place.

God wants to bring sweetness out of your hard places! What a blessing it is to have friends who pray for you, send you love notes and even art sculptures, all to remind you how much God loves you!

Sue, you wrote "…the real prison camp is inside of our minds. It's what caused us to become victims in the first place."  I've never heard that expressed as clearly and as unambiguously.  And it so represents the gift you bring to all you touch …

What a cool sculpture and one that really speaks to the heart!  Our Daddy sure does love us and provide for us, doesn't He… right when we need Him to show up the most.  So glad the sweetness of life is pouring over you!

What  beautiful images of the sweet healing powers of God here Susan. We all need that soothing balm in our lives, especially when the trials of life have turned our hearts into stone.

You’re so very right, Carolyn… what else but love, poured out consistently and faithfully, could turn a heart of stone into living flesh. Thank you so much for taking the time to read and comment here, Carolyn… I so much value your compassionate wisdom!
