Alzheimer’s and Memories

Keeping the Memories Alive for Alzheimer's Patients

By: Susan McKenzie

If you've ever been a caregiver for a loved one experiencing a chronic, life-threatening disease, it can be very challenging knowing how to provide just the right care without overwhelming yourself and burning out in the process!

Alzheimer's disease is one of the most challenging illnesses facing today's increasing numbers of retirees. While we cannot offer a cure, we can help to make your job easier with a surprisingly simple aide! It's a beautiful life story book with full-color pages and plenty of room for stories, photos, and mementos… a guidebook connecting your Alzheimer's patient between the past and the present.

Keeping memories alive for loved ones suffering from Alzheimer's is a great way to help them feel comfortable and secure in knowing who they are and where they have come from. The most challenging part of dealing with Alzheimer's is the agonizing and progressive memory loss. Caregivers are the ones who provide that link between the past and the present, but it can be very challenging to answer the same questions over and over again, for both you and your loved one.

Creating a life story book is one of the solutions the Mayo Clinic has suggested may help provide that security by providing mementos, photos, and stories to remind your loved one about who they are, who their family is, and what has happened in their lives. These life story books are a tangible connection to the past for Alzheimer's patients.

As they flip through these thick, glossy pages, they are immediately connected to their personal history and life stories! Life story books are both a memory aide for your loved one suffering from Alzheimer's but even better, a keepsake your family will cherish forever!

Alzheimer's is a progressive disease, so if you are already caring for a loved one suffering from this disease, now is the time to begin recording as many of their memories as you are able to. At TeamFamilyOnline.com we are here to assist you in recording these valuable stories with a simple step-by-step system that is completely free!

Our elders are an amazing treasure of real live history and the lessons learned: The Great Depression, World War II and beyond, the Civil Rights Movement, the age of so many information and communication inventions… If we don't begin now to record their stories, these precious memoirs will be lost forever!

Let's work together to secure those precious family stories, photos, and mementos. We're looking at 10-15 minutes a day, and it's a fun way to bond with our loved ones!

Susan McKenzie knows how it feels to lose everything. Voted "most shy" by her high school classmates, Susan has since learned how to break out of the "victim mentality" mold that her silence enabled. Susan has done extensive research to understand how it could have happened that a "nice girl" whose main pursuit in life was to work toward a happy marriage, a peaceful home, and together with her family and church to help relieve suffering in the world could have ended up in 30-years of suffering the pain of brokenness. The surprising answers are shared in her posts, articles, and her book-in-progress. As you venture on this life story journey with Susan, you will experience how God shines His most brilliant light in the darkest hours.

Many of Susan's readers have also overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles and wish to create new family legacies by sharing their life stories of suffering and triumph. By sharing your own life story, no matter where you've been or what has happened in your life, you are creating a new family legacy and Susan's mission is to help and inspire you along this path, step-by-step.

I've been writing on this topic for the last few weeks for a client. This will be a great resource for my client's clients (they are caregivers). You brought up a great point, our elders are amazing treasures and there are so much we could learn from their life stories.

Claudia, thank you for stopping by! I love to people write life stories for their elders. It’s so important to capture their memories while they are fresh. It’s very interesting that you are writing on this topic and I wish you the best!

Thank you Susan for such an amazing opportunity for caregivers and especially family of
Alzheimer's sufferers. It is a tragedy for all people who have ever experienced their loved ones consumed by this progressive disease and any help to make the situation easier is so important.

Wow Susan we have more in common than you may think. My mother-in-law was diagnosed with Alzheimers  almost two years ago. Thankfully we found some incredible live-in caregivers. The married couple are trained in caring for the needs of patients with Alzheimers. Mom gets to remain in the comfort of her own home, in her own memories. Unfortunately, before we realized what was going on she had thrown out pictures, pots, pans and many, many others items. Our discovery was almost too late.
The good news is that we have found there is hope for those suffering from this dreaded disease without using pharmaceutical drugs. Mayo Clinic has written a study on oxidative stress and the link to many degenerative diseases including Alzheimers. I would encourage anyone suffering from this or other diseases; or loved ones to reach out, ask questions about natural alternatives documented and studied by this renowned health institute. They don't have to live in darkness or pain anymore.

Carla, that is extraordinary! Your last line:”They don’t have to live in darkness or pain anymore,” lifts my heart with joy. Thanks so much for sharing, and from what I’m seeing at your site you are experiencing this incredible health boost, yourself, and it’s very encouraging!

I love that Mayo Clinic has suggested this kind of tool, Susan, as a useful link between the past and the present for people with Alzheimer's Disease.  And I'd love to see you get this out in front of more caregivers who could share life story books with loved ones.  Are there any forums where Alzheimer's caregivers hang out?
